Young writers, pre-teen, teen, school age, fresh versifiers encouraged by parents, teachers, brought to readings, all ages open Mics in cafes, coffee houses, bars, bookstores, they present their work, confidently, secure, insights, visions, observations, innocent point of perception...or not; receive great applause, cheers, hoots, howls, wolf whistles, little proteges, mentor pets, glow at approval.
English majors, elder potes, in attendance, watch , listen, hear, in awe, note pure joy of new youth writer, word orgasms rese through crowd; audience ponders...
"Oh, sher, yer good, presentation, recitation, nice allitaration, double entendre, wordplay, vocab' punchline, and comfort at open mic, which will change yer life, experiences never dreamed, but...
do you know what yer getting into...? Signing on for...? Undertaking...?
Take a long, hard, gander at yer elders, tattoo'd, slurry, glazey eyed, bags from writing jags late into night, not eating, days on end, never leaving abode, delivery cartons, boxes, piled up, trash overflowing, crumpled, torn, pages litter floor, nicitine-coffee-tea-ganja-yellow stained teeth, rumpled,
writing, reading, rewriting, rereading, repeating, making it up as go along, no formulas, templates,
recipes, mores, taboos, limitless, nothing's sacred, absolute Freedom, no rules but what we make, all limitations are self imposed, emulating all sexual, gender, identities, expanding probable possibilities, timeless, ageless, therapeutic catharsis, primal screams; ink darkens fingertips, nails, cuticles, black, blue, red, calloused, track marks up-down arms, legs, mainline injected lingo, slang, knowing the sting of a ballpoint pen piercing skin, stoned out of mind, high on silver syllables singing, riding creative rush, pushing further, brain pan dented, dinged, surge forward, neurons snap out of synch, mind expands to breaking, consumed by verse, become Poem Incarnate, speak in rhythm, rhyme, 5-7-5; jail, max'd out bank accounts, credit cards, on gas, food, lodging, poetry and restaurants...what is the link...?
Going places, meeting peeps, Z-list celebs', pote's, writers, musicians, artists of all stripes; top gear, booze, drugs, festivals, giant puppets and larger than life experiences; sacrificing family, friends, employment, belongings, self, to...POETRY!
Yes, all you youth and budding writers, take a good long hard oogling gander at yer open mic contemporaries and peers, think, and ask yerself, do you want to embrace that lifestyle and be a...

Parting Thought & Lesson
Anyone who can speak, read, write their language,
can write, read, speak Poetry,
in their language.
In Five Easy Steps:
1-think of a subject on which to write;
1 subject per Poem,
K. I. S. S: keep it simple, succinct.
2-brainstorm, don't think too hard, or overthink,
write down chosen subject, words, lines,
in no particular order.
3-at some point stop brainstorming, organise,
words, lines, into somethng that makes sense;
don't worry about form, style, rhythm, rhyme, syllables,
the piece will dictate that as it is born.
4-read, edit, add, subtract, rewrite, reread,
until Poem is done to Writers desired doneness;
only the writer knows when it is done.
and voila viola
a Poem.
5-share, at an open mic, online post, letter to loved one,
whatever, wherever, whenever;
welcome constructive critique
to grow and improve as a Poet.
Repeat as needed.
Lastly,
no piece of art is truly complete,
every Poem is a
Finished Rough
and changes with each rewrite.
Oh, and writing can be done ANYWHERE
keep a pocket notebook and writing utensile
with you at all times,
because, inspiration strikes when least expected.
