Lowell Celebrates Kerouac Weekend
35th Anniversary
October 5 - 9, 2023
A Travelogue in Words and Pictures

Every Columbus - Indigenous Peoples Day Weekend since 1988 the Kerouacian Nation
descends on Lowell Massachusetts to honor her son, Jean Luis Kerouac, Jack Kerouac,
walking and bus tours of the sites and sounds of Jack's life and novels based in the
Merrimack River Valley.

From all over the globe they attend, lectures, films, gallery showings, jazz shows, and
open mics, hobnobbing, rubbing elbows with fellow subterranean types, air fragrant with
tobacco and marijuana smoke, Old Worthen House serving Poetic Snacks and adult beverages;
the Worthen, haunt of literary types since the 1800's, Poe, Dickens, Kerouac, and many more
darkened their door for a pint or two.

All around downtown events are happening and happening events they are, too, finger
snaps echo down the corridors of history, resurrecting lost neighborhoods and times of the
Mill City, birthplace of Jack, where he returned many times from the road, his final ride
in the back of a long black Cadillac hearse to Edson Cemetery where he rests in eternal
peace, his friends joining he and Neill at the Great Poetry Reading in the Sky over the
ensuing years, names are spoken with reverence and words are recited in memory, sixty-six
years since On the Road first blasted onto the scene and the Beat Goes On.

Why does Kerouac Matter...? If one has to ask, one hasn't read any of Jack's books,
poetry, or plays; may we suggest starting with, Maggie Cassidy, Visions of Gerard,
Mexico City Blues, or, better yet, Vanity of Duluoz, a very funny book.  Possibly available
at your friendly, your local, your friendly, local, library...or not, depends on how the Head
Librarian feels about Beat Writers and other Controversial Publications, if it's Banned...
BUY IT! READ IT! SHARE IT!

Over 5 strange days, Da Butcha and DaS Ginger Mann and their Beat Luvin' Friends,
celebrated Kerouac and did so much, we can't fit it all in one blog, there's over 400 photos
to choose from and most of them are keepers...  We'll split the weekend across a few posts.

Let us begin this journey without further ado, a Day Road Trip to Western Mass...

Trust Me, I've Tried
(Smoke Inn Blues)
Pome of Ascent

Can't overdose on weed
one can smoke-smoke-smokety-smoke
munch-munch-munchety-munch
and get high as fuck indeed
yet, no matter how much you toke
or gobble down as infused lunch
you cannot overdose on weed
only fall asleep with one too many'a poke
and get fat from the munchies punch
one just can't OD on weed.

Greenfield Agape 400' Above Sea Level
for Emerson, Tennyson, and Whitman
Poem of Peaking

Early Autumn moderate hike
tres amigos hump along wooded path
onward, upward, to Poet's Seat Tower
memorial stone edifice
concrete levels, diamond plate steps,
wrought iron spiral staircase
au natural stair stepper workout
sweat beads, breath caught tower top
grand sights from lower landings,
spectacular views from pinnacle
valley spreads out, soccer pitch
neighborhoods, mountainous horizons,
early foliage peeps 'tween green
descend admiring graffiti
neon colours, black, white tags
indecipherable non-artistic...
penis outline silhouette 2nd floor
NOW That's ART!             NOT!
Side path to rock benches
granite carved with memories
clifftop panoramic scene
suck up Summer sunshine heat
vitamin D, UV Rays, forest scents
breathe deep Local Skunk fresh air
rest stop post uphill - tower climb
crickets chirp in brush
pine trees laden with cones
oaks bearing acorns, wild flowers,
bounty of ultra wet season
hawk circles overhead hunting
dark choco-peanut butter square
melty sweet pick 'em up bits
finger lickin' tasty good snack
tres muchachos meditate, chillax...
Take to sloping auto road
stroll back to Pumpkin Carriage
refreshed.

Words of Parting

The view from below
flag waves, leaves fall, breeze does blow,
clifftop Poet's Seat
great green space, quiet, kept neat,
a beautiful place to go...

a beautiful place to go.

On the way back to the Think Tank, back tracking along Mass State Route 2, a side trip through
Turner's Falls, and an impromptu stop at a random Cannabis Dispensary for a great deal on
prerollies, 5 $10 1 grammers for $40, a back parking lot bahgain if ever we saw one;
we bought 5 for the rest of the weekend, plus the Lazy River Products previously purchased,
we were loaded for bear!
Yogi Bear, he's a big toker, chronic munchies, thus, picnic basket thievery.

And onto the unavoidable...

What Day Road Trip on Kerouac Weekend would be complete without a stop at
the Edson Cemetery, Lowtown, Taxachusetts...?

None.

And so our intrepid trio visited with Jack for a poke, a reading of Da Butcha Originals,
and inspirational advice critique...

One Version

Slip into your clothes
you'll never wear
put the ring in my nose
you'll naught be aware
for your selfie I pose
because...you're not there...

you're not there...

earth's current events
science fiction prophesies
the future is now

the future is now.
Ti Jean and DaS Mann listen intently.
Da Butcha intently listens to his Masters Voice in the Sounds of Silence.

Then onto DaS Pad for a Crock Pot Pork Loin Dinner
decompression and a movie,
an' den...
T'Bone delivered safely back to his basement apartment in Dracule.

That concludes, Thursday, October 5, 2023,
tune in again for the next day, Friday,
when the Poetry begins in earnest.
