Excerpt from
The Cat That Changed My Life
Bruce Eric Kaplan
c: 2002
Simon & Schuster
It was one of those amazing nights where you're digging through garbage finding one piece
of delicious food after another. I was with my pal Bud and as we stuffed ourselves, we became
giddy with delight.
Then Bud cut himself on a can and started bleeding profusely. I got scared, thinking he might
die. But the bleeding eventually stopped, and we started for home as the sun began to rise.
I watched Bud limp and told him how sorry I was he got hurt. He smiled and said he didn't
mind. It was all part of the experience of the night. He wanted the entire experience--both the
good and the bad parts. That was the only way you ever really knew you experienced
something fully.
For some reason, those words really resonated with me and permanently adjusted my
perceptions quite markedly.

we're brothers seeking the full experience....
