Ever wonder what's up inside those old penstocks of the Mill Canal System?
How they operate? What they do?
Well today we get a glimpse inside the Hydraulic Race Company Penstock
that powered Lockport, NY, industry alongside the Erie Canal way back in the day,
but, first, we need to power up ourselves for a full day of roaming the streets
and environs of the Greater Lockport New York area,
it's off to The Original Pancake House for a high protein and coffee brekkie...

Sacred Sightseeing
Original 'cakes
again, change up, 'basa, eggs,
p'cakes, and oj;
over to, Lockport,
Erie Canal hub, 5 locks
converted to two;
cavernous boat ride
under streets of old city
where factory stood,
wall remains cling to hillside
overlooking towns namesake;
time to kill, wander
canal area downtown
many closed storefronts
economy down
pre-during-post pandemic
sans depressed urban
vibe, streets clean, tourist trap, too
and visible improvements;
canal in use now
tour boat and kayaks enter,
watch locks do their thing.

Lockport Underground
Kayak flotilla
paddles frantically to next
lock behind tour boat
gate closes tightly,
water level lowers craft
to rivers surface
kayakers, tourists,
flush thru lowest final gate
to canal proper
in time for...High Noon Cave Tour,
old hydro penstock tunnels,
factory ruins
old industries evidence
powered by hydro
access water from
canal, diverted down hill
as lower course fill
manufacturers profit
assorted goods and products;
short boat ride to end
back to lock and hillside stairs,
fresh air and sunshine.

Pumpkin Chai ice cream
in cone, post underground walk
cuz, I was a good boy,
lick up frozen treat
watching boats traverse canal,
I'm well behaved boy,
not being burden
begging for souvenir junk,
whining, cold, wet, beat,
hungry, thirsty, aching feet,
I am a very good lad,
eating all my veg'
taking meds and vitamins,
doing as told youth,
uncles fave nephew,
budding teens favorite, too,
road trips ain't too bad,
activities can't tell dad,
like that thing Unc' makes me do...
Good times had by all,
onto Fort Niagara walk,
I'm very good boy.

Fort Niagara
long time gone decommissioned,
buildings left to rot,
too late to stroll grounds,
not too late to walk graveyard,
check out unknown tombs,
cruise around base streets,
military landmarks left
after abandoned,
any veterans remain
won't remember anyway;
Oppenheim Parkland
soccer, picnic pavilions,
the place for fresh air;
back at Driftwood room
return CAT call, b-day song,
watch Hocus Pocus,
DaS plays on cell and Ob' writes,
bags packed, Monday outfits prep'd.
Return trip plotted,
Jello Musee, Sharon Springs,
brekkie undecided.
